Project Update – Thebarton Theatre Redevelopment

A fresh future for a timeless concert venue.

Officially opening in 1928, Thebarton Theatre has long been a cornerstone of Adelaide’s cultural scene. Originally serving as the Thebarton Town Hall and Municipal Offices, it quickly became a sought-after venue for concerts, films, and theatrical performances.

Together with architects JPE Design Studio, Kennett have been entrusted with this important project for the City of West Torrens to deliver an enhanced experience for performers and audiences, simultaneously maintaining the heritage features and celebrating the building’s historic character through thoughtful, contemporary design.

The redevelopment includes the following;

  • New Eastern Entry Foyer: A two-storey addition on the eastern side will serve as the main entrance, featuring a spacious foyer that seamlessly integrates with the theatre’s historic architecture.
  • Upgraded Amenities: Patrons can look forward to modernised front-of-house facilities, including refurbished bars and lounges, ensuring comfort and convenience during events.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: The inclusion of lifts and improved access points will make the venue more accessible to all guests.
  • State-of-the-Art Loading Dock: A new loading dock on the northern side will streamline operations, allowing for more efficient set-up and dismantling of performances.
  • Sustainable Initiatives: In line with contemporary environmental standards, solar panels will be installed on the roof, reducing the theatre’s carbon footprint.

Thebarton theatre will be re-opening it’s doors in October 2025.
