Project Start up – UnitingSA Eleanora

From early settler farmland to modern social affordable housing, the Eleanora site has many stories to tell.

In 1867, the Eleanora site was a farm established by Alfred Perry and named after his wife, Eleanora Gordon Clark. In 1958, the property including the homestead and outbuildings was purchased by the Westbourne Methodist Church in December 1958 and renamed the ‘Ranch’. It then operated as a campsite for around 20 years and the original homestead and the outbuildings remain to this day. In 1980, Rev Jack and Peggy Goodluck, with the support of the Uniting Church, opened ‘Eleanora’ as a community centre. Over the years, the centre expanded to become a homelessness shelter, providing crisis accommodation to adults in the Noarlunga area until it closed in 2017.

It’s fitting that its next chapter will continue that legacy of support by creating much needed social and affordable housing with a design that will honour the site’s past while delivering both market rentals and social affordable housing options.

Kennett has been engaged to deliver this housing development which includes 46 new homes. Kick off for this project was recently celebrated on site with a number of speeches and a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Senior Kaurna man, Robert Taylor.
