Project Completion – Thebarton Theatre

Unveiling the redevelopment of Adelaide's most iconic concert venue.

Kennett was engaged by the City of West Torrens in 2024 to work together with leading architects JPE Design Studio, to bring their striking design for the Stage 1 redevelopment of the Thebby Theatre Complex to life.

Originally built in 1928, the theatre was in need of significant upgrades to the facility in terms of both functionality and access for audiences and performers. The project initially entailed demolishing the external bar and bathrooms which were added in the1980’s, as well as the complex demolition of internal elements of the existing lobby to facilitate new structural elements.

The upgraded entrance and foyer now create an impressive arrival experience, while the addition of a new bar and lounge areas make it easier for visitors to relax before and after shows. A lift was installed to provide full accessibility for all patrons for the first time in it’s almost 100 year history. Accompanying this was the bespoke heritage restoration and painting of the theatre auditorium & civic centre to bring the site back to its former glory. Also included was a new loading dock to the rear of the theatre to allow for increased storage and safer access to the stage as well as new back of house amenities and electrical and communication systems upgrades.

Outside, a newly landscaped plaza space offers a welcoming area for people to gather, and the refreshed eastern façade highlights the theatre’s architectural heritage while maintaining its State Heritage-listed charm.

The new look Thebby was officially opened on the 22nd October 2025 with a performance by Marcia Hines and Casey Donovan.
