The Project

Kennett was engaged by the City of West Torrens to work together with leading architects JPE Design Studio to deliver the Stage 1 redevelopment of the Thebby Theatre Complex.

Originally built in 1928, the theatre was in need of significant upgrades to the facility in terms of both functionality and access for audiences and performers. The bespoke heritage features of this iconic Adelaide concert venue required a sensitive and considered approach, blending craftsmanship with innovation to celebrate its history, while creating a contemporary space for the enjoyment of future generations.

What we delivered

  • demolishing of external bar and bathrooms
  • complex internal demolition to facilitate new structural elements
  • new main entry lobby
  • new bar and seated lounge areas
  • heritage restoration of the theatre auditorium and civic centre
  • a lift for improved accessibility for the first time in the theatre’s history
  • loading dock at the rear for increased storage, safety and access for performers’ equipment
  • back of house amenities including major electrical and communication system upgrades
  • newly landscaped plaza space with increased carparking
